On average, each person on Earth uses 328,366 gallons of fresh-water each year for drinking, cooking, cleaning and flushing waste down the toilet. But some of us use more than our share. The average American uses almost twice the global average - 655, 939 per person, enough to fill an entire Olympic-sizes pool. Compare that to other industrialized counties, like Japan, where the average person uses 304,590 gallons of water a year. The diffence is even more pronounced when you look at developing countries. The average Indian uses only 258,889 gallons. Even desert countries like Yemen and Egypt use less water per capita, 163,522 gallons and 289,979 gallons respectively. Women in countries without basic necessities like indoor plumbing, spend an inordinate amount of time just providing their families with water. Freedom from this daily chore would allow women to attend school and become leaders in their communities.
